Shows the fear of the eternal moments before going over the top. Helpful when considering how much time features in Owen's poetry
Wrong gas masks but some powerful images of gas and flames.

Spielberg shows the chaos and scale of battle.

Yes, they really did start off the war on horseback. Remember - no telephones or radios either.

Regeneration - most of the movie online. Sassoon and Owen feature heavily. Some really striking imagery but often very graphic (in both senses): don't watch with your nana.
Crossing the Line: Trailer for a Peter Jackson (Lord of the Rings) short film on WWI. |
Blackadder Goes Forth (BBC). Awesomely biting comedy which somehow manages to capture the pity of war more sharply than many of the OTT 'war is hell' films. If nothing else, watch the last episode. If you've watched all the episodes, it'll hit you hard
A bit hokey and low budget but has James Bond in and shows the fear of going 'over the top' in end of The Trench. So what has The Hurt Locker and the experience of Afghanistan, Iraq etc got to do with Owen? Watch and consider how our whole view of 'war is hell' has been shaped by WWI poets. Could you imagine this film as a 'brave glamourous and noble men die for their country' text? How has Owen's role left a legacy beyond mere words? |
